How did you become interested in Bioethics?

I first became interested in bioethics while taking a course in high school on stem cell biology and the ethical implications of embryonic stem cell research. This experience opened my eyes to how seemingly disparate fields such as biology and philosophy could be synthesized.

What is something about your personality that has contributed to your interest in bioethics?

I think the biggest personality trait of mine that has contributed to my interest in bioethics is my curiosity. I have always wanted to understand things at the most fundamental level, and I feel that studying bioethics fosters this spirit of curiosity.

What is the scariest situation you have found yourself in?

When I was 15, I was going through the process of certification for SCUBA diving. One of the training exercises was designed to have me hand the instructor my regulator while drawing my own air from the alternate air supply. Instead of grabbing the alternate air supply mouthpiece, I grabbed the snorkel mouthpiece, from which I subsequently tried to breathe. After two or three mouthfuls of saltwater, I thought I was going to drown, but my instructor handed me his emergency air supply before I tried to surface.

What is your favorite destination and why?

This past summer, I had the opportunity to travel Europe, and the city I enjoyed the most was Prague. It had a good combination of architecture, food, and night life, and I hope to one day return.

What is your favorite kind of food?

Italian food is definitely my favorite cuisine. My grandmother was from Italy, and some of my earliest memories were of eating homemade cannoli at the dinner table.
