Student Spotlight: Hannah Chaddha

How did you become interested in Bioethics?

I became interested in Bioethics because its subjective and interdisciplinary identity entertains essential and necessary questions in the context of biomedicine, such as the appropriateness of technological interference in medicine and the extent of human jurisdiction in medicine that has become increasingly scientific and technical. Additionally, the role that technology plays in health, and more generally in our lives, has always interested me due to my childhood interest in dystopian and science fiction films.

What is something about your personality that has contributed to your interest in bioethics?

Ultimately, I am motivated by my quest for knowledge, truth, and consistency/reliability, which is analogical to my commitment to the mission of science and questions that surround science. I am also motivated by empathy and compassion, which are two virtues that bioethics invokes to analyze and resolve problems that arise from science, medicine, and technology.

What are some of your hobbies?

Recently, in my mission to actualize my creative inclinations and potential, I have discovered my love for fashion. I worked as a stylist at a boutique in Chicago last summer, and ever since then, I have dedicated myself to learning about the fashion industry and fashion itself. As a hobby, I enjoy studying historical, modern, cultural, and contemporary fashion and applying the knowledge that I have gained to styling my friends and family members. I love drawing on inspiration in pop culture, digital media, nature, and my everyday life to assemble artistic looks for others and myself.

What is your favorite destination and why?

My favorite destination is New Delhi, India, because that is where my father’s family lives. When my family and I visit, I make it a point to immerse myself in my father’s culture through language, food, music, film, etc. I connect with my father’s family--who I do not have the privilege of often seeing due to geographical differences. As a result, New Delhi, India, has truly become my home away from home.

What might someone be surprised to know about you?

Someone might be surprised to know I am a professional hip-hop dancer in Chicago. I have been dancing for approximately four years. My dancing journey has gifted me with the opportunity to meet talented individuals in the dance world, work with several teams and choreographers in Chicago and Los Angeles, travel, and stay active while relieving stress.
